Security Pro Tip: One Simple Garage Door Fix That Can Stop Break-Ins
Did you know it only takes 6 seconds to break into your home? I’m guessing you didn’t, but bad guys do…..
Most home have an attached garage and in the majority of those homes there is an electronic garage door opener, what if I told you all you need is a wire coat hanger and with a little practice you can break into your garage in just a few seconds. I got into this industry back in 1997 and that’s when I first learned about this and have been warning people about it since. It took until 2011 for someone to actually make a video and post it on YouTube called “The 6 Second Break In”. I even turned it into a talking point to get peoples attention and turn and walk away at random places I would walk up to someone at a Home Depot or a gas pump and say “I know you aren’t looking for a security system right now (as I hand them my business card) but if you have one of those red strings hanging in your garage, That’s a Problem!” and then I would turn and walk away and let curiosity do what it does and it never failed someone would either come find me in the store or call my number and say, “I have one of those red strings, what’s the problem?
The red string is there for emergencies, if you lose power you can pull the string and disconnect your garage door from the motor so you can manually open the door, but most people thing the red string is in the center of the garage by the motor, because that’s where they see it when the door is open. But when the garage door is closed its literally 6-12 inches inside the garage. Close enough for a coat hanger to be slid in and hook it and the red string is long enough to partially come out so a bad guy can pull it and release the door while still standing outside the home. The handle wont let the string come all the way out, but it doesn’t need to come all the way out to disengage the door from the motor.
Tip is to either cut it short so you can only reach it from inside, remove it all together and keep your own coat hanger to use if loss of power, or zip tie the latch where you have to use a lot more force when pulling on the string to break the zip tie
Pro-Tip add and garage door controller to your Alarm system that will not only alert you when the door is open but it will allow you to close the door from your phone if you accidently left it open
